Raise the alarm as soon as fire or smoke is identified. Call the fire service on 101 or the unified emergency number 112. Give the location clearly and share what is known without delaying the evacuation.
Leave by the nearest safe exit. Do not use lifts. Follow the marked route unless smoke or fire makes it unsafe, in which case use the next safe route. Move steadily and do not stop to collect belongings.
Help anyone who needs assistance according to the site's plan. Staff should know in advance who may require support and which colleagues are responsible. Do not take an unsafe route or attempt firefighting unless you are trained, the equipment is appropriate and there is a clear escape path.
Go to the muster point and take a headcount. Report anyone unaccounted for to the emergency services; do not re-enter to search. Stay out until the competent authority says it is safe. Regular drills make these actions familiar and reveal blocked routes, unclear roles or weak headcount arrangements before a real emergency.
